Singapore U23 team took the revenge of first game defeat by beating Maldives U23 2-0 in an ill tempered friendly game that saw five players being sent off. Maldives conceded two silly goals from defensive mistakes in either half and second half of the game will be remembered mostly on the physical play from both sides.

In the 7th minute of the game Nafiu saw his shot saved by Singapore keeper and two minutes later a header from Arif (Bakaa) was saved again.

Singapore scored the first goal in the 34th minute. Sujad provided a low cross from the left wing and keeper Athif missed the ball due to defender Ahmed Abdullah resulting the ball ended up in the net.

Four minutes after the break Ayob crossed the ball into Maldives penalty area, this time Akram tried to clear the ball but he missed it and at the same time keeper Athif too missed it and the ball found its way back into Maldives goal.

With two goals down, Maldives strengthened their attack and Singapore opted to defend. The first clash between both teams came in the 53rd minute. Officials from both teams had to intervene to stop the clash and referee Adil sent off Singapore player and Bakaa from Maldives.

Later second half substitute Shafraz was red carded and another two players from Singapore were red carded with a second booking.

After the match, Maldives under 23 coach said that he was happy with the performance of the team.

“I am happy with the performance from the players. We got limited time to prepare the team for the friendlies and they did their best”

“The opposition was very physical, but the team never gave up and fought back.”

“Our opposition did not create chances like we did. We gifted them two goals from silly mistakes which should be avoided. There was lack of communication between goal keeper and the defense line. Except for that there weren’t much chances for them. But we had a lot of goal scoring opportunities. So, overall I am happy”

“We need to work on our physical aspect of the game. But the matches in here finish on October 3rd and we have to leave for Asian Games around 3rd November. It gives around a month for us to prepare the team. I don’t think we can do much to improve the physical aspect of the players. So I would urge the clubs to help on that front and to use them in their line ups as much as they can”

Maattey also gave his view on the refereeing of today’s game.

“I felt the referee should have controlled the game right from the start. But he could not and that lead to all those yellows and red cards. He has to put his stance right from the whistle, especially in a physical game like tonight”

Meanwhile, Singapore’s Under 23 coach Surandhuram Murthi also supported Maattey’s view.

“Tonight even we played against 14 players. The refereeing was poor. He should have controlled the game right from the start. He can’t control the game after everything happens. That’s impossible”

“Our boys played well and I am delighted with the win”
